This article focuses on the 1854-1861 Journals of James G. Bleak, an oft-quoted member of the Martin Handcart Company. Metcalf seeks to more fully tell Bleak's story, both before and after his experience with the Martin Company. The whereabouts of the 1854-1861 journals were unknown from 1907 until 1996, when a descendant donated the journal to the Church.
