In this article, Madsen traces the increasingly important role of sacred historical places in Mormon culture, and the official role of the Church in constructing and maintaining such places. Initially the Church in Utah had little interest in these past sites of Mormonism. Later the Church began acquiring such places, but avoided and discouraged enshrining the sites, valuing them for their historical significance only. Madsen argues that Gordon B. Hinckley, during his apostleship and presidency of the Church, initiated the movement toward honoring such sites for their sacred nature as well as their history, providing the membership of a diverse multinational church with a shared sense of identity and space.
