This Article chronicles how Ezra Taft Benson was chosen to coordinate the Church's relief efforts in post World War II Europe. This was the Church's first large scale humanitarian outreach. Benson's zeal, talents, and experience with government agencies led to his appointment to this important task after Elders Mckay and Widstoe were unable to administer the project because of bad health. After his arrival in England, Benson travelled to numerous cities in Europe to visit Saints and coordinate relief. He was horrified and overwhelmed by the desperate conditions of the peoples of Europe after the war, and the atrocities they had suffered during that conflict. Benson's work during the ten months he spent in Europe set the pattern for subsequent Church relief work in Europe and the world in general. This time in Europe also affected Benson deeply, strengthening his testimony of the gospel, giving him greater compassion for the sufferings of his fellowmen, and entrenching in him revulsion toward tyrannical Fascist, Socialist, and Communist governments.
