"The Story of The Book of Mormon," published by George Reynolds in 1888, was the first published attempt at illustrating the Book of Mormon. Four Salt Lake City artists, George Ottinger, William C. Morris, William Armitage, and John Held Sr., created illustrations for the book. Much of the artistry in the book was done in the tradition of prior religious and historical paintings, and contemporary knowledge of Mesoamerica and Native American cultures. This volume was widely used both privately and in Church educational settings, and its illustrations became the authoritative Book of Mormon imagery for a generation or more of Latter-day Saints.
