Marriage: a universally practiced social union that abounds in culturally specific customs and courtesies, many of which must be taken into consideration when providing counseling services. This study sought to discover the unique mate-selection criteria used by young women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to uncover their personal feelings regarding these criteria. Using ethnographic methodology and grounded theory techniques, this was accomplished through in-depth interviews with recently married members of this population. Data indicated that among more common items three undeniably unique criteria are used; a preferred mate will (a) be deemed worthy to participate in LDS temple ceremonies, (b) honor the priesthood, and (c) have completed service as a proselytizing missionary for the church.
