"In this study, eight participants were interviewed in-depth regarding the role of religion in coping. Resulting descriptive data were analyzed by means of qualitative data analysis methods. Descriptive findings are summarized. A model is presented which summarizes the role played by religion in coping as described by participants. Specifically, religion appears to (a) influence the development of an individual's habitual or "default" coping approach, (b) provide a vehicle through which the individual may search for a better approach to coping, (c) play a role in determining the content of new rules for coping, and (d) play a role in determining the nature of a new system of values and configuration of priorities. Theoretical implications are discussed and directions for future research are outlined." [Author's abstract]
