In 1967 a scholarship program named in honor of the current President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was inaugurated at Brigham Young University. By 1989, 480 scholars (300 males, 180 female) had been selected because they were academically promising, active LDS Church members and exhibited leadership potential. This study surveyed the scholars' previous preparation, experience at BYU, and their professional and church activities since their departure from campus. Over 70 percent responded and notable findings included: Most come from traditional two parent families with an average of five children. Their parents had higher than average education. In high school and at BYU they participated in extracurricular activities as well as excelling academically. Following graduation many of the scholars opted for graduate school. Ninety-eight percent who married did no in LDS temples. Ninety-seven percent described themselves as active church members thus confirming other studies which indicated the religiosity increased with educational attainment. In contrast to the normal pattern, one-half of the graduates have contributed financially to BYU even though none have reached the typical prime donor age.
