This thesis is the story of my understanding of the interstitial ground of academia and two communities of people living side by side. One is a Mormon community defined by a religious world view, the other is a Native community defined by ethnicity. These are self definitions evident in the narratives of participants of the research. While engaged in research, a tension exists between academia and these communities which involves the complexity of cross-cultural interpretation and processes of boundary maintenance.
