Brigham Young was the driving force behind Utah's experiment in alphabet reform and the creation of the Deseret Alphabet. However, the concept of revising language symbols was not original to Brigham Young, but was fairly common during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in England and the United States. Brigham Young's motivation for creating the alphabet included a desire to teach English to immigrating converts in a shorter amount of time, to make learning easier for children, and to teach English to Native Americans. One theory that the alphabet was created as a secret code to hide Church secrets does not make sense since the so-called code was published and distributed widely on cards for all to learn. Moore reviews Young's efforts in working with the board of the University of Deseret in creating and teaching the Deseret Alphabet.
