In commenting on Richard Bushman's "Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling", David Whitaker said that the book is not for tourists. Many historical studies have become more like tours or like a "spectator sport" for the reader. "Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling", however, requires "active intellectual participation", giving the reader new insights on the subject and promoting spiritual growth. Writing such a biography of Joseph Smith was not simple task for Bushman. In order to complete this biography, Bushman had to figuratively travel into the life of the Prophet. The challenge is partially due to the fame of Joseph Smith among Latter-day Saints and the memories that they have of him through church lessons. It is also due to the difficulty of sorting through secondary literature about Joseph Smith and the difficulty of navigating the manuscripts created during his lifetime. Many of Joseph Smith's journals were dictated and written through others and were thus subject to influence from the minds of those writers. Also, many sermons went unrecorded or were not recorded using shorthand, leaving an incomplete record of the sermon. Letters of correspondence proved to be a valuable resource for Bushman, giving him insight into Joseph Smith's thoughts and feelings. In "Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling", Bushman wrote of Joseph Smith's religious growth and progression throughout his life.
