On June 11, 1829, Joseph Smith obtained a copyright for Book of Mormon as a way of protecting the book and managing the costs of producing it. During the beginning of the year 1830, Abner Cole published parts of the Book of Mormon in his newspaper. In response to Cole's actions, Joseph Smith defended his rights to the book though arbitration against Cole in New York. The role that the copyright played in the final decision of the arbitration is unknown. At the time of this suit, Joseph Smith had not met all of the federal requirements for obtaining a copyright, and therefore the copyright was not legally valid and may not have been accepted under court scrutiny.
