O'Donovan shares the genealogy and life history of Walker Lewis, a black member of the Church who lived in Lowell, Mass. and was ordained an elder by William Smith. He feels that Lewis' high position in African Freemasonry, Brigham Young's learning of Lewis' son's marriage to a white woman, and the actions of one William McCary (a half-African and half-Indian man who started his own break off sect and began practicing polygamy) "were the three most important factors in Brigham Young's instigation of a priesthood ban against all men with African ancestry."
