Duffy traces the increasing trend in the scholarship of Mormonism toward sensationalism and exoticism. Particularly focusing on John L. Brooke's 1994 book, "The Refiner's Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644-1844," and Clyde Forsberg's 2004 book, "Equal Rites: The Book of Mormon, Masonry, Gender, and American Culture," Duffy shows how dispositions toward the Church color a historian's portrayal of Mormonism. He discredits Forsberg's argument that the Book of Mormon contains hidden Masonic symbolism and teachings. He analyzes the debates between orthodox Mormons and the Church's academic critics over Mormon historiography and discusses the decisions of the publishers at Cambridge and Columbia Universities to publish hermetic and exotic interpretations of Mormonism without first consulting orthodox Mormon scholars.
