When the pioneers were just beginning to settle the Salt Lake Valley, part of a large farming area was used for orchards. This area of the valley is now the city of Holladay. Thomas emphasizes these old trees' value in preserving history and provides information on the species and types of trees in the area. Most of his information came from Mildred Cook Hicken, an old friend of his mother's. Thomas collected stories about the trees from people who knew Hyrum King North, a great pioneer orchardist. In honor of these former, vast orchards, Thomas has now planted thirty-four fruit trees, grafting them from Utah heirloom pioneer trees. His goal is to not only preserve the trees but also to save the stories that go with each one.
