Thompson states that though Sampson Avard was one of the three founders of the Danites, he was not their leader when Joseph Smith denounced him and the Danite band while serving in Liberty Jail. According to Thompson, Joseph Smith used Avard as a scapegoat to "protect the reputation of the Church" and the First Presidency. He states that the First Presidency were aware of the Danites and uses a document by Reed Peck, self-proclaimed Danite and apostate from the Church, as well as the Scriptory Book of Joseph Smith Jr., kept by George W. Robinson, to support his claims.
