Behrens traces some of the influences that Dartmouth College played in the lives of the Smith family. Hyrum attended school here for a few years and may have tutored Joseph in what he learned, including the Dartmouth Lectures which have some "parallels" to Mormon Doctrine. Doctors from the college's medical school were able to operate rather than amputate Joseph's leg. Also, a legal case between Dartmouth College and its trustees may have been the "precedent" that Joseph Smith used to craft the Nauvoo Charter.
