McMurray, the president of the RLDS church, reflects on the inevitable tension that exists between the institutional church and history. He writes in a personal way about his earlier involvement with the John Whitmer Historical Association and as an assistant to the History Commissioner in the RLDS church. He discusses his feelings upon accepting a job to serve as a secretary in the Office of the First Presidency in the RLDS church. He critically reviews some of the earlier historical articles that he wrote from the perspective of his current position. He also offers his thoughts about some essays written by Paul Edwards, Roger Launius, and Danny Jorgensen that assess the current situation of the RLDS church. He concludes with some comments on the uses of history.
