In 1859, W.W. Blair and Edmund C. Briggs began visiting with former members of the Mormon Church living in southeast Iowa who had elected not to go to Utah. They were sent as missionaries of the fledgling RLDS church to raise up branches and found this area to be a fertile field. They found many who had affliated with various schisms and others who simply could not accept Brigham Young as their leader or polygamy as a practice.
