Emigrating Journals of The Willie and Martin Handcart Companies and The Hunt and Hodgett Wagon Trains

The Perpetual Emigration Fund was established by Brigham Young to help those Saints who did not have the means to leave Europe and come to America....with thousands of European converts, mostly poor, desperate to come to Zion, Brigham Young devised a plan where they could come if they were willing to pull handcarts, walking all the way...The first three companies experienced a little hardship, but made it to the Great Salt Lake Valley, pulling their handcarts down Emigration Canyon....The last two handcart companies, the James G. Willie and Edward Martin Handcart companies, due to a late start, handcarts not being ready and early winter storms, met with disaster along the Sweetwater River in Wyoming.....This is a chronological history of these events, using daily journals of the Willie and Martin Handcart companies, along with the two wagon trains, from the time they boarded the good ships Thornton and Horizon, until they reached the valley. Besides the daily accounts taken from journals, I have included lists of both the handcart companies and the Hunt and Hodgett wagon trains. [Author]
