This author argues that the Mormon Church helped defeat the Equal Rights Amendment because Mormon women seized the opportunity to serve their Church, to secure their eternal fate, and to expand their own power within Mormonism. The author also feels that the Church saw this as an opportunity to extend more authority over its members by casting this issue as a test of divine authority.
