David L. Bigler assigns the causes of the Utah War to the United States when it received the Utah area in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and to the Gold Rush in California. The first cause put the Mormons back in conflict with the United States government, and the second cause put the area of Utah right in the middle of migration to California. For the Church's part, the zeal of the Reformation and improved relations with the local Indians led to a more confrontational atmosphere in Utah. President Brigham Young also declared martial law and stopped all travel and communication "into or through or from" the area. Ultimately, President Young chose the path of peace.
