Today the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints boasts an amazing eleven million members worldwide. The Church has grown from its humble beginnings to a worldwide power. From the time the Saints left Missouri during the winter of 1838 until the first company landed in Salt Lake City, 1,300 miles would be crossed and ultimately seventy-thousand pioneers would make the journey. The stories of the Pioneers are truly amazing and thought provoking. However, one aspect: that is often left unattended is the aspect of music and its role in the life of early Mormonism and the Pioneers. This study shows how music had a tremendous impact on the early church and played a central role in the development of this American religion. [Author's abstract]
