By first setting aside the debate over Joseph Smith to discuss revelation in general, Mouw responds to David Paulsen by exploring in greater detail the differences between Protestants and Catholics on doctrinal development. He then notes Latter-day Saint parallels with Pentecostalism's restoration of supernatural gifts. Mouw addresses the great modern success of Joseph Smith's theology, comparing and contrasting Mormonism with the Christian Science movement. In different ways, each responded to Puritan theology by reducing the metaphysical distance between God and man. Mouw also suggests points of further discussion between Latter-day Saints and traditional Protestants.
