In 1868, six out-and-back Mormon teamsters drowned trying to cross Green River on a ferry en route east to assist Mormon emigrants to Utah. An eye-witness teamster composed a song, "The Boys of Sanpete County," to memorialize their sacrifice. Those who drowned included Niels Christoffersen, Peter Smith, Peter Nielson, Christian P. Jensen, Jens Christian Nybolle, and Thomas Yeates.
