Following an idea conceived in Sarah Kimball's parlor, the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo was organized by the Prophet Joseph Smith to provide relief to the poor, care for the sick, and give service to those in need. Over one thousand women of varying ages and situations joined the society between 1842 and 1845. A list of the 1,010 women from the Relief Society minutes whose names could be verified follows an explanation of the methodology Ward used to compile the list.
