A history of the life of Katharine Smith Salisbury, daughter of Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith, was presented. Katharine's growing up years were filled with tension, anticipation, and watchfulness due to religious persecution. She was sometimes called upon to hide the golden plates; so, she had a few opportunities to handle them, although she never saw them. In Kirtland, Katharine married Wilkins Jenkins Salisbury, which became another source of trial. Jenkins proved to be inconstant to Katharine and to the Church, and the Salisbury family were frequently isolated by poverty and distance from church and family. After the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum, Jenkins reunited with the Church for a short time, but followed William Smith in his disaffection from the Church. Although she later joined the Reorganized Church, after the death of her husband, Katharine turned to Brigham Young and the Utah church for financial support. Katharine remained in Hancock County, Illinois, despite persecution from her neighbors and the murder of her second son.
