An 1843-44 passage on the New Bedford whaling ship Timoleon launched Mormon missionary efforts among the native population of the South Pacific. Missionaries Addison Pratt, Benjamin F. Grouard, and Noah Rogers traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Tahiti, Tubuai, and the Society Islands. Pratt returned to the United States in 1848.
