"Late nineteenth-century comics . . . identified, reflected, and expressed the attitudes of their era about the absurdities of the human condition. By exaggerating and distorting the commonplace, they transformed the solemn, remote, and sinister into the familiar, benign and ludicrous . . . Mormons and their exotic marital practices were fair game for a comedy of exaggeration: and they soon became the nineteenth-century equivalent of the twentieth-century traveling salesman, polack, and dumb blond . . . It is impossible to quantify how much anti-Mormon comedy contributed to the eventual toppling of polygamy: but what is clear in this record of what the public laughed at is its seemingly uniform implacable opposition." (Abstract from Author's text)
