"The Missionary diaries of Thomas Ephraim Harper . . . reveal much about Mormon proselytizing in the American South in the 1880s, likewise providing a view of the milieu in which the work was done. This paper introduces the diaries, briefly reviews the story of violence against Mormon missionaries in the Southern States Mission, questions the 'backcountry' nature of LDS missionary work in the South, and examines Harper's experiences with mob actions."
