This chapter gives a brief overview of American Mormons first encounters with East Asia. It took a major decline in missionary success in the Atlantic world, mixed with a heavy dose of Millennialism in Salt Lake City to convince Church leaders that it was time to proselyte again in East Asia. These encounters between the Latter-day Saints and the Chinese and Japanese eventually had a major impact on the LDS Church's decision to open an East Asian Mission by 1901.
