Woods and Atterberg describe the events of Mormon immigration in Keokuk in 1853, including the Saints' arrival, preparation for the westward trek, and departure. Isaac Haight directed the migration and outfitting in Keokuk. Some of the Saints were able to work temporarily in Keokuk. Many found the overland trail difficult. In 1854, the outfitting post was moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Although emigrating Saints only used Keokuk as their outfitting post for one year, 1853, their faith and their physical labor left a lasting impression on the city.
