Wilson studies the counsel given to women, particularly through the Deseret News, between 1850 and 1870. Generally addressing "undesirable qualities that required correction," the Deseret News published articles by Church leaders as well as articles from other U.S. newspapers which cautioned women against idleness, extravagance, and superficiality. Women were encouraged to develop domestic skills and spiritual substance. Wilson also addresses the Latter-day Saint movement for female suffrage. She concludes that women today face the same conflict as did those of the mid-nineteenth century in balancing domestic and out-of-home responsibilities.
