While presiding over the Southern States Mission, B. H. Roberts retrieved the bodies of two missionaries, William S. Berry and John H. Gibbs, who were killed by a Ku Klux Klan mob. Roberts removed the bodies from a graveyard and shipped them to Salt Lake City by train. While dressed in a disguise to avoid further problems with the mob in obtaining the bodies, Roberts had his photograph taken; after sending it to his family, the photograph was widely distributed in Utah without his permission.
