Van Beek shows how the modern Church has expanded into other nations much as it did in nineteenth-century Deseret. He compares the settlement of the Great Basin with the colonization of Africa. He laments many policies of the "Domestic" or American Church as he notes the difference in attitudes between members of the Church in Holland and of those in the United States, concluding that "members in Europe are not European Mormons, but definitely Mormon Europeans." As America's international image declines in the twenty-first century, Mormonism must escape its American nature to sustain growth.
