Troll explores the relationship between Joseph Smith and Samuel Tyler Lawrence, a treasure-seeker in Palmyra. After separating this particular Samuel Lawrence from four other local men of the same name, Troll lists seven contemporary references to Lawrence in connection with Joseph Smith. Samuel followed his sister Fanny and her husband, Abner Cole, from New Jersey to Palmyra where he became involved in money-digging and as a result met Alvin and Joseph Smith. It is possible that he accompanied Joseph to the Hill Cumorah in 1825. He did not join the Church and later moved to Oswego, New York.
