Horace Ephraim Roberts and his family moved in 1837 to Ripley, Illinois, where they established a family pottery business. In 1840 the family was baptized into the Mormon Church, and they were subsequently kicked out of Ripley and moved to Nauvoo. There Roberts established an independent family pottery. After the move to Utah, Horace Ephraim Roberts became the first potter in Provo.
