Joseph Smith, a candidate in the 1844 presidential election, advocated prison reform, abolishment of slavery, a strong national banking system, the annexation of Texas, and greater protection for oppressed peoples. By the time of his martyrdom, Joseph had already gained enough political support that his presence in the election would likely have been a significant factor in the race's outcome, even if he had not prevailed. Despite widespread opposition in 1844, many of Joseph's proposed political changes have since been implemented into the American system. The governments of Illinois and Missouri have recently issued formal apologies for their states' oppression of the Latter-day Saints.
