During the early years of the Church, establishing publications was a high priority. The Evening and Morning Star was first printed in Independence but was moved to Kirtland in December 1833 due to Missouri persecution. The Latter-day Saints Messenger and Advocate as well as the Elders' Journal were published in Kirtland. The Times and Seasons, a monthly paper, was printed in Nauvoo. The Wasp, later renamed the Nauvoo Neighbor, was formed in Nauvoo to counter the anti-Mormon Warsaw Signal. The anti-Mormon Nauvoo Expositor's outrageous claims prompted Joseph Smith, as mayor, to declare the paper a public nuisance. Legal circumstances surrounding the Expositor's destruction ultimately took Joseph to Carthage and his death.
