Tanner explores the influence of Shakespeare on the Latter-day Saints by detailing the history of actual Shakespearean productions, academic Shakespeare, and general Shakespeare literacy in the Church. Shakespeare's plays were staged in Philadelphia, Nauvoo, the Social Hall and Salt Lake Theatre in Salt Lake City, and throughout the Great Basin. Notable professors of Shakespeare at BYU included Alice Louise Reynolds, Alfred O. Osmond, Irene Osmond Spears, and Nan Osmond Grass. Church leaders throughout history have quoted Shakespeare and the September 1964 Improvement Era even took Shakespeare as its theme. Tanner regrets that children today are not taught to memorize Shakespeare and other great poetry and literature.
