Few images--photographs, daguerreotypes, paintings, and profiles--of the Joseph Smith Sr. family have survived. Until recently, photographs existed of only three of the Smith children, William, Katharine, and Lucy. In 1992, a rectangular photograph of a round daguerreian button was found which resembled a previously discovered oil painting. By comparing known portraits of Lucy Mack Smith and existing images of her daughters, and by examining historical evidence as to the button's date of production, Romig and Mackay conclude that the button is the only known photographic image of Lucy Mack Smith.
