Paulsen shows how, on various doctrines, the Christian community has come to teach nearly the same principles that Joseph Smith alone taught two-hundred years ago. Some Latter-day Saint teachings, which were once thought heretical, have gradually gained acceptance in non-LDS Christian theology. On each of the following seven doctrines: (1) the resumption of New Testament charismata, or spiritual gifts, and the reopening of the canon; (2) God as a personal and passible being; (3) a social model of the trinity; (4) deification; (5) the divine feminine; (6) God as eternally self-surpassing; and (7) postmortem evangelization; Paulsen presents the actual teachings of Joseph Smith, summarizes past criticism, and demonstrates a contemporary theological convergence toward Joseph's teaching.
