Strong local opposition made the acquisition of the Hill Cumorah difficult, at least initially. Through the influence of Willard Washington Bean, a man called to live on the Joseph Smith farm and to make friends with the local people, the Church was able to purchase the Hill Cumorah piece by piece during the 1920's.
