Elder Oaks speaks of Joseph Smith's most important legacy--revelation, both personal and prophetic--and its impact on Joseph himself and on members of the Church today. His title, "Joseph Smith in a Personal World," is addressed from three main perspectives. Elder Oaks first describes revelation in his own life as well as his personal view of the Prophet. Second, insights into the character and personality of Joseph Smith are derived from Elder Oaks's own research into the legal circumstances surrounding Joseph in nineteenth-century Illinois. Third, Joseph Smith has influenced the lives of thousands of Latter-day Saints in the Phillipines, particularly through their own personal revelation, and Elder Oaks gives specific examples of Filipeno conversions. He shares Joseph's teachings on revelation and scripture and concludes that each human can verify the prophetic message through personal revelation.
