Those Latter-day Saints who observed the events of the 1848 Revolutions in Europe were united in their anticipation of a new era of Republicanism in which monarchies and aristocratic institutions would no longer be in a position to oppress the working class. The writings of William Ivers Appleby, Wilford Woodruff, Orson Hyde, Orson Pratt, Orson Spencer, John Lyon, and various other missionaries and members show that Mormons responded to the 1848 Revolutions with a worldview that reflected their own history and eschatological doctrine. These writers assumed that religious oppression would subside, signaling an influx of Mormon converts through enhanced missionary efforts. The Mormon observers viewed the fallen rulers of Europe as counterparts of their own American oppressors and thus cheered what they viewed as the just efforts of the proletariat. They also believed that a period of human unification would follow in preparation for the Second Coming of the Savior. These many hopes and beliefs of optimistic Latter-day Saints were then challenged when the newly created governments of Europe proved unsuccessful.
