Lindquist analyzes the uses of the word "keys" in Joseph Smith's teachings. To Joseph's nineteenth-century audience, the term would have connoted other secular and theological associations besides simply the "keys of the kingdom." Joseph Smith used "keys" not only to refer to the rights of priesthood holders to preside, but also in reference to the "key of knowledge" and to keywords as passwords. The Masonic culture with which many of the Saints were associated also shaped the use of "keys" among the Saints, particularly in temple worship. Lindquist traces the linguistic evolution within Joseph Smith's teachings between 1829 and 1844.
