Non-Mormons of the day claimed that the Mormon War of 1838 was the result of Latter-day Saints breeching an alleged agreement previously made in which Caldwell County had been set aside as a refuge for the Mormons and in which the Saints promised not to extend settlement beyond the newly formed county without the permission of local inhabitants. LeSueur explores the creation and settlement of Caldwell County, the Mormon expansion into Daviess and other neighboring counties, the resulting anti-Mormon frustration, and finally the understanding between both parties of the alleged agreement, including a discussion of its debated existence and nature.
