Jensen studies the atmosphere of the succession crisis after Joseph Smith's death by examining two letters written by Elias Adams, who followed Brigham Young and the Twelve, to his brother George, who joined the Strangite movement. In Nauvoo, Elias Adams was a rank-and-file member of the Church without access to the extra knowledge (polygamy, temple ordinances, etc.) obtained in Joseph's inner circle. The historical and scriptural justification Elias gives his brother indicates a rationale employed by common members of the Church in following Brigham and not Sidney Rigdon, James Strang or any other schismatic leader. The full text of both the July 1845 and February 1847 letters is included in the article.
