By looking at contemporary usage, occurrences in the King James Version of the Bible, and Joseph Smith's other teachings, Jackson and Hunt attempt to discern the intended meanings of the words reprove, betimes, and sharpness in D&C 121:43. They conclude that reproving implies correcting or teaching, that betimes refers to an early, yet appropriate time, and that sharpness means discernment, understanding, and perception.
