In 1853, European Saints emigrating to Utah used Keokuk, Iowa, as their outfitting post. Isaac Haight directed the Saints' preparations in Keokuk. Procuring wagons and cattle was one of Haight's chief occupations. The immigrants arrived in New Orleans throughout the spring and summer on eight ships, and the journey's details were captured by artist Frederick Piercy. While many of the travelers came to Utah through the Perpetual Emigrating Fund, or through stopping and working along the way, a significant portion came on the Ten Pound Plan--a less leisurely but cheaper alternative to the normal twenty or more pounds many immigrants spent--which made it possible for many of the poor to come from Europe to Zion. In Keokuk, the immigrants created a camp and held weekly church services. Many Saints worked on grading the city roads and others worked at their trades. Some of the Saints visited Nauvoo. Of the ten wagon-train captains selected, nine had already journeyed to Utah before. The wagon companies all departed between May 16 and July 1. After crossing Iowa, the companies resupplied at Council Bluffs and all made successful journeys to the Salt Lake Valley.
