In 1904 national fervor was stirred up over what B.H. Roberts called that "same old question of polygamy and polygamous living. "Latter-day Saints were accused of continuing the practice of polygamous marriage, despite promises to stop in the 1890 Manifesto. Reflecting on the scholarly work done on polygamy, Hardy revives the important question of how important polygamy really was for Mormons in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Early researchers and Church leaders suggested that polygamy was an i?ncident' in LDS history, but not a central concept. However, arguments to this effect, such as claiming that less than 5% of Mormons engaged in polygamy, have been called into question with the recent resurgence of interest in the history of Mormon polygamy. Current research suggests that between 15 to 30 percent of the LDS population participated in polygamy. Some authors have proposed that polygamy was not seen as essential to Mormonism, and would have died out of its own accord. Recent research shows this idea to be incorrect. Hardy briefly covers the question of whether polygamy boosts or suppresses population growth, and some of the eugenics arguments used by Latter-day Saints to support polygamy. Hardy mentions several aspects of Mormon polygamy that others have researched, and references some of their works and findings. Hardy concludes that polygamy was of utmost importance for Mormons, both before and, to some extent, after the Manifesto.
